During my time at Colgate University, I met a very dedicated father with a loud voice screamed inspirational words out to his daughter as she inched into first place during the 600m race. Her name was Samantha Prendergast and boy was she a fast one. On January 8th, 2010, I had the opportunity to interview senior Samantha Prendergast of Utica Proctor after she participated in the 600m race. Prendergast finished first in the 600m with a 1:45; however, she aspires to run 1:40 for the state qualifying races coming up. Not only is Samantha involved in indoor track but she also loves running cross country. Prendergast explained how indoor track is growing on her more than outdoor because of the 600m, which is becoming her favorite, but cross country is not far behind her top choice with the scenery of being outdoors rather than running the same track around in a circle on a flat surface. Prendergast stated that she wants to run in college and is extremely inspired after meeting 1500m pro Suzy Favor Hamilton. She likes Favor Hamilton’s positive attitude and encouragement. Samantha admits, however, as a Volleyball player, she hated the idea of running until her coach conned her into it… now Prendergast loves the idea of feeling fast and going against the wind. She partakes in hard practices almost every day and thanks her coach for being the high-strong, hardworking man that he is. Not only does she find her coach extraordinary, but she also thinks of her team as her family. Prendergast stated that the diversity and teamwork they have is what makes Utica Proctor able to work as a whole. Now, Prendergast has to work solely on her timing for state quals and bring out her old good luck flats to run in as she strives for first.
